Benefits can be defined as the positive implications, both direct and indirect, resulting from a certain action. They include both financial and non-financial aspects. Public transport has many benefits for modern societies. Economic benefits result from reduced traffic congestion and its associated costs in terms of hours of delay on major travel corridors, reduced externalities, etc. Public transport services usually save energy consumption and contribute to reduced environmental pollution. Health benefits derive from reduced road motor vehicle emissions and improved air quality in case of large scale use of public transportation.

Also public transportation offers a safer alternative than personal vehicles. It could decrease stress and its negative impact on our health. As obesity rates rise alarmingly, the availability of efficient public transport systems encourages people to get out of their cars and adopt a more active lifestyles. It also enhances mobility during emergencies. Public transport could also provide personal mobility and freedom and could enhance equity in the society by providing access to quality transportation for low-income and minority communities.
