Active modes of transportation like cycling, walking, jogging and in-line skating are the most efficient non-polluting ways to move around a community and provide an excellent opportunity to get daily exercise. The target groups for walking and cycling include children, senior citizens, disabled persons and tourists. Promoting walking and cycling as a daily means of transportation to school would set a sustainable transport pattern for the young generation and would contribute to daily physical exercising, hence better health and studying capacity. Developing appropriate infrastructure to ensure safe walking and cycling would also greatly contribute to the ability of elderly people to move around urban areas.

Another target group to be encouraged to use cycling and walking facilities are tourists and people practicing sport. The provision of tourist promotion material highlighting cycling and walking, free bikes rental, conveniently located bike and walking paths would contribute to developing sustainable tourism and transport patterns. Relevant programmes to encourage and support walking and cycling can increase the choice of transport modes by raising public acceptance and support for non-motorized travel.
