Regular assessment of walking and cycling performance and needs is necessary to ensure an efficient integration of walking and cycling considerations in urban transport policies. Cycling and walking should be included in the Strategic Environmental Assessments (SEA), Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) and Health Impact Assessments (HIA) undertaken for urban areas.

Other assessment tools are the development of relevant qualitative and quantitative indicators to facilitate regular reporting for an assessment of the current state of affairs and future trends, as well as conducting surveys among the population concerned.
