Work plan > Sustainable
and healthy urban transport and planning
Implementation
- In line with the decisions of THE PEP Steering Committee, at its first session (Geneva, 10-11 April 2003), a Workshop on “Sustainable and Healthy Urban Transport and Planning” was held on 16-18 November 2003 (Nicosia, Cyprus) to review good practices and lessons learned on integrating environment and health considerations into urban transport and land-use planning. The workshop highlighted the importance of the transport related environmental and health hazards that the countries in East Europe, Caucasus and Central Asia (EECCA) and South-East Europe were facing due, notably, to the rapid growth of private car travel in urban areas. It also underlined the economic, political and institutional barriers that made it difficult for these countries to control and to cope with the undesirable effects of these transport developments.
- At its second session (Geneva, 29-30 March 2004), the Steering Committee encouraged focusing further activities on EECCA and South-East Europe. To this end, the Conference on Implementing Sustainable Urban Travel Policies in Russia and other CIS Countries was organized jointly with the ECMT and the Russian Ministry of Transport in Moscow on 30 September and 1 October 2004. With a special eye on Russian and EECCA experience, participants reflected on and shared national experiences in applying strategies to improve implementation of sustainable urban travel policies and in understanding their environmental and health implications.
- In view of the success of the Moscow workshop, Georgia, the Republic of Moldova and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia have expressed interest in hosting further workshops addressing specific issues in urban transport of concern to them and their neighbouring countries. A first of these sub-regional workshops will be organized in Georgia in late 2006, possibly on 18 – 20 October (See advance information on the Georgian workshop)
